Courts do not take lightly to people who attempt to circumvent their laws, which is why they enact such strict penalties for crimes like probation and parole violations. Driving with a suspended license (or DWSL) may not seem like a big deal at the time, but it is when it comes to trial. While we understand license suspensions can be restrictive and frustrating, it is never a good idea to drive without a current driver's license. Your first charge for DWSL will result in a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by a $500 fine and six months in jail. If you are charged a second or subsequent time, you may receive a year-long jail sentence and up to $4,000 in fines.
One of the most irritating aspects of this charge occurs when someone is pulled over and charged for DWSL without even knowing their license has been suspended. This is alarmingly common because the Department of Public Safety sends their notices of suspension to a person's last known address on their driver's license. The USPS has been instructed by the DPS to not forward any of their letters, so when these license suspension notices go out to a person who has moved, they will often fail to be notified of the suspension. Our Houston DWSL defense lawyer can use this fact in your favor to help you fight your DWSL charges.
There are many reasons your license can be suspended, including:
DWI
Drug charges
Minor in possession of alcohol or tobacco charges
DUI by a minor
Failure to maintain high-risk SR-22 insurance
Failure to pay child support or alimony
Medical conditions that inhibit your driving
